Player One: An Illustrated History of Game Controllers Vol.1 begins our journey way back in 1972 starting with the Magnavox Odyssey controller that is oft heralded as the grandfather of modern game controllers, through the joystick boom of the early '80s, to the emergence of game pads as the dominant force by the late '80s.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The book features photographs, detailed descriptions, reviews and technical information on over 120 different joysticks and game controllers released between 1972 and 1989. It includes copies of retro game controller adverts, technical reviews of select controller types, and articles on the history of game controllers and manufacturers.

The following are a few sample pages from the book:

We are producing two more volumes over the next 18 months to complete the series which together will cover over 360 different game controllers from the very beginning of gaming right through to the present day.

By releasing the volumes this way we are able to get the books in your hands quicker than if we combine them into a single volume. This will also allow those who are interested in particular eras to just get those books.

Volume one is scheduled for release in July 2016.

Player Two: An Illustrated History of Game Controllers Vol.2 will be coming to Kickstarter later this year with Player Three following in early 2017.
